Dear LME Families,=20
At the PTA meeting last night it was discussed about the legislative =
updates with public school financing. In summary, we are still waiting =
to see what the state will do. Below are some ways you can give input =
during the state legislative session. =20
1) There is a parent driven rally this Saturday (3/12) down at the =
capitol. It was recognized at the RRISD PTA council yesterday at our =
meeting. Please realize that PTA does not take a political stand but =
they simply recognized the event. You can click on the website to find =
out more if you are interested. =20

2) Last week, State Representative, Mark Strama, spoke to all of our =
feeder schools in the area and stated that the legislators need to hear =
from the parents what you want. You can do this by contacting your =
local representatives. If you go to http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/ you =
can contact your politicians directly. It also gives you daily status =
on bills, etc. =20
3) Bill 275 by Representative Pitts is the bill that will have them =
voting on using the state rainy day fund. This was mentioned at our =
council luncheon yesterday. This is a bill that you may be interested =
in following. The state needs only majority to use the $4 billion that =
will cover the shortfall from the last budget, but it will need a 2/3rds =
vote to use more of the fund over $4 billion. =20
4) If you did not fill out the survey that the district had on the =
website, please remember you can still write to them your thoughts too. =
I wrote a letter and got a response back from the superintendant in 24 =
hours. They are listening to your ideas! =20
I hope this helps for those that are interested in how the state will =
finance public schools. As a representative of PTA, I have attended =
many meetings on this subject and thought it was important to send =
information that I have received. After attending several events, I =
have discovered how important it is to follow up with your =
representatives. With that thought, I pass on this quote that I feel =
is pertinent to the subject. =20
